When Should Be Your Puppy’s First Vet Visit?

After you adopt a new puppy, when should be your puppy’s first vet visit? Ideally, within the first week of bringing him home! Keep reading to learn more!

As one of the many “firsts” with your new puppy,
take them to your vet soon after bringing them home!

Your Puppy’s First Vet Visit

Puppy Being Held

Since most puppies go to their new homes around 6-8 weeks, your puppy’s first vet visit needs to be scheduled. Dr. Vivian Cardoso-Carroll, DVM of PetMD.com recommends having your pup meet his vet within the first week of bringing them home. This gives the puppy time to settle into their new home and for the pup parent to learn about their personality.

Caution: If you are adopting a puppy from a breeder or shelter, carefully read your contract about when you need to take your puppy to see the vet to avoid breaking your contract and potentially dire consequences!

Some breeders require a vet visit within 72 hours, so be sure to read the fine print or ask the breeder directly.

Your Puppy’s First Vet Visit: What to Expect

Taking your new puppy to the vet soon after his adoption offers many benefits!

  • First, a vet visit is an important part of a young puppy’s socialization and establishes a crucial relationship for the rest of his life.
  • An early vet visit helps your veterinarian establish a baseline for your young dog’s overall health as well as any potential issues or abnormalities through a physical examination. If necessary, the vet may also do some lab tests. The vet will check your puppy’s body, skin, coat, eyes, ears, nose and mouth. In addition, they will also test their vision, hearing and alertness. Preventative puppy care will ensure a healthy pup!
  • The vet will also review the breeder’s vaccination and deworming history and schedule the puppy’s remaining vaccinations. Vaccinations are critical protection for your pup’s health since the protective antibodies from their mother’s milk have begun to wear off (around 6 weeks).
  • Your puppy’s first vet visit is important for your new bundle of fur, but it is also a great opportunity for you to get your questions answered by a professional!
  • What should you bring along to your puppy’s first vet visit?
    • You and your puppy.
    • Fresh poop sample.
    • All records and paperwork.
    • Your questions (write them down so you do not forget!).
  • The first vet visit is also a good time to discuss microchipping your puppy!

Previous Vet Visits by Your Puppy

Before you adopted your furry new friend, a reputable breeder will have already taken the pup in for a vet visit around 2-3 weeks of age. Again, take any paperwork from your breeder to your first vet visit so the veterinarian has a complete medical history for your puppy. The more your vet knows about previous vet care and dosages, the better he can care for your new addition!

After Your Puppy’s First Vet Visit: Moving Forward

After your first vet visit with your new puppy (around 6-8 weeks of age), vet visits should occur every 3-4 weeks ending around 4-5 months of age. This may be adjusted by your vet based on your puppy’s needs and history.

I got a little boy doodle from here and he is a great dog! He has the best of both breeds in him. The perfect personality and has been so easy to train. He is a great addition to my family and a perfect companion for my Pomeranian. I couldn’t be happier! I am out of state and the whole process to get him was very smooth and I have no complaints. Would definitely recommend them!

A great experience with obviously very experienced breeders. Our journey was clear the whole way. The team was great in explaining. Could not be happier with the Goldendoodle addition to our family.

Our Sammy Joe is now 10 months old and what a beautiful dog. We have had Goldens for over 20 years so we’re very familiar with the breed. He is very healthy and very smart. Mona was so helpful when we contacted her in our search for a dog. We told her what our lifestyle was and what type of puppy we were looking for. She definitely recommend the best dog for us (thanks!) hopefully I’ll get a recent picture of Sammy and add to this post. Thanks again Jim & Paulette

Mona and her family were wonderful to work with. She consistently gave updates as we waited for Oakley to be born. We enjoyed selecting our puppy and then receiving weekly pictures and updates as we awaited picking up Oakley to bring her into our family. Oakley is an incredible dog!! She is spunky, yet gentle. She LOVES people! She has been a fun puppy and very easy to train. She follows instructions well, and we couldn’t be more pleased with this addition to our family. We highly recommend Arkansas Bear Creek Goldens and Doodles for beautiful, well bred dogs who are sharp, smart and easy to train. Mona is wonderful to deal with and Oakley has been a wonderful addition to the Duddleston family.

Three years ago we bought our golden retriever From Bearcreek, she was 10 weeks old. The next day Mona called us to check on her. Throughout Riley’s life, Mona was always there to answer questions and to help us. They truly love their dogs and it shows. I recommend Arkansas Bearcreek to anyone who wants a happy puppy.

Could not be happier with my experience with Arkansas Bear Creek Doodles. They raise the puppies like their own with so much love and care. They were so easy to work with and brought Lexie with everything I could need to get her thorough the first few weeks of transition, including medicine in case she got sick and her favorite toy. She has been the BEST dog.

Our family has purchased 2 puppies from Mona's family. Both of the are wonderful dogs. They're not only adorable, but they have great temperaments and are extremely smart. Both puppies were housebroken in only a few weeks. They're both wonderful family members. I would definitely buy another puppy from them.
