Miniature dog breeds are also called mini dogs and even
“purse dogs!” But regardless, these smaller canines are some of the most popular dogs.

But if you’re planning on adopting a mini dog breed – and have kids – below is what you need to know first!

First, What is a Mini Dog?

Simply put, miniature dog breeds are those who are small and remain that way for their entire life. Miniature purebred breeds are recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). The range for a miniature dog breed is flexible, but typically a mini is defined as the following:

  • Height: 10 inches or less
  • Weight: 3-12 pounds as adults

But, some miniature K9 breeds can be as tall as 18 inches and as heavy as 22 pounds without losing their miniature classification.

Why are these smaller canines so popular? The reasons are as varied as the mini breeds! But the top reasons include:

  • Miniature dogs are popular with city dwellers who live in smaller spaces.
  • They make the perfect-size lap warmers!
  • They are easier to travel with (hence the “purse dog” distinction).
  • They are easier to handle, groom, brush and bathe.
  • They are ridiculously cute and never grow out of that cute stage!
  • They eat less food.
  • They are typically very active, intelligent and even protective!

With being very active, these miniature dog breeds may be perfect companions for children! With all the benefits listed above, should you add one of these smaller canines to your family if you have children?

Before you rush out to add a miniature K9 to your family, understand the following points first!

  1. Due to their smaller size, miniature dogs may be safer around older children (7 or 8 and above), especially as puppies. Toddlers will not realize the danger of stepping, pulling or even playing rough with a mini dog which could potentially lead to puppy injuries and even bites from an injured dog.
  2. While all dogs should be properly socialized as soon as possible, it’s even more important with miniature dogs who may tend to be dominant. It’s critical to thoroughly socialize a smaller dog to all kinds of:
    ~ People including children.
    ~ Sounds.
    ~ Other dogs and pets.
    ~ Environments and
    ~ Objects
to avoid potential fears and anxieties in a world that is much bigger than they are!
  3. If not properly socialized, these tiny dogs can become tiny terrors trying to boss or control the world around them! This is also known as the “Napoleon Complex” and develops from the way they are raised and treated by their owners (not genetics). Also known as the “small dog syndrome,” little dogs with big attitudes refer to the negative behavioral issues among smaller dogs. This behavior must be addressed and corrected; just as you would correct unwanted, negative behaviors in a larger dog, it’s just as important in a little dog. No, it’s not “cute” and could pose even worse behaviors including aggression. When it comes to training and boundaries, little dogs should be treated the same as their larger counterparts and not be allowed to get away with bad behavior!

So don’t be fooled by the small size! If you’re planning on adding a mini dog to a household with children, make sure to invest the time and training with the dog and the entire family!
