The Poodle’s Humble Beginnings

Before Poodles became the popular canine of the elite, they were actually bred as water retrievers for hunting (even though the AKC categorizes Poodles in the non-sporting group).

Considered the “National Dog of France,” the Poodle originated in Germany and is identified with German words that mean “to splash in the water.” In France, they are known as the “duck dog.”

Interestingly, the term “French Poodle” is a complete misnomer (or an inaccurate designation)!

The Poodle Cut

Another misnomer regarding Poodles is the popular “Poodle Cut.”

Many people mistake this common cut as a “fashion statement” but it’s not how it was meant! The Poodle Cut is a throwback to the Poodle’s origins as a hunting dog.

For this athletic water retriever, less hair would help the Poodle be more efficient when swimming. But to ward off the cold water, puffs of hair were left around the joints and upper torso for warmth.

It’s Hair, Not Fur!

Most dogs sport “fur” that grows to a certain point and then sheds. With Poodles, their hair (much like human hair) does not fall out and never stops growing. It’s one of the reasons Poodles are considered “hypoallergenic” due to low shedding! While all dogs shed to some degree, the Poodle is well-known for shedding less and causing fewer allergic reactions for their owners.

Warning! They May Outsmart You!

While most dogs are smart in their own unique way, the Poodle is known to be highly intelligent and able to quickly learn, memorize and perform a variety of tasks. They are so intelligent, Canine Psychologist, Stanley Coren claims they are the 2nd smartest dog breed for obedience and work IQ.

Even more unique, Poodles demonstrate an ability to learn from past experiences. This ability is referred to as adaptive intelligence and is probably why they are referred to as “thinkers.” With these incredible traits, the Poodle makes a wonderful:

even highly-prized truffle hunters!
