Dog parks promise freedom and fun for our four-legged friends. But, know these 5 things FIRST before you go!

Brief History of the Dog Park

Two Dogs Playing Tug of War with Toy Outside
Two Dogs Playing Outside

The park exclusively for dogs was first established back in 1979 and since then these off-leash areas have rapidly grown in popularity. For many of the 69 million American households with a dog, these parks have become an integral part of their regular routine with their dogs.

Thousands of these off-leash areas for dogs are scattered throughout the United States with Boise, Idaho claiming the number one space for the most in a city; fifteen to date!

But is a dog park a good idea for all dogs? Should your dog go? Before you and Fido head to one, there are 5 things you must know first!

“4 Reasons Why and When Dog Parks can be Dangerous

Understand Your Liability

Most of these parks have posted rules. Make sure you know them! Most parks are also not responsible for injuries or worse (to you or your dog).

Understand that you and your dog use this area at your own risk! Keep in mind that irresponsible owners and untrained dogs may also be sharing the park with you and your canine. Put your phone away and always stay alert and watch for potential issues before they happen. Even before you enter the K9 park, spend a few minutes checking out what’s going on before entering. If you (or your dog) feel uncomfortable, do not enter the park! Instead, make a play date with dogs you – and your dog – know well.

Understand the Risks!

Remember, these canine spaces are open to the public so that means all kinds of owners and dogs are going to be sharing the space with you. Unfortunately, people may bring their sick dogs to the park leaving behind:

    1. Poop containing parasites and diseases.
    2. Contagious diseases (like parvo, Kennel Cough or Canine influenza).
    3. Infestations of fleas or mange.
    4. Urine-contaminated water (risking dogs and humans).

These are all dangers that can put you and your dog’s health at great risk!

Learn the “12 Etiquette Rules for Dog Parks”

Do THIS Before the Dog Park!

All dog owners should follow this rule BEFORE taking their dog to an off-leash park.

Exercise your dog first!

While this rule may seem counterintuitive (isn’t that why you’re going to the dog park in the first place?), whether owners exercise their dog first may very well predict the eventual outcome. Dogs who have too much pent-up energy, are fearful, stressed or anxious can create an inhospitable and even dangerous situation spurred on by all the excitement if they are not exercised first!

Dogs that Do NOT Belong in Dog Parks!

Since these areas are typically unsupervised, dog owners are expected to respect other people and animals and not bring the following into the off-leash area:

  • Female dogs in heat or coming into heat soon.
  • Senior dogs.
  • Sick, contagious or injured dogs.
  • Unsocial or aggressive dogs.
  • Be HONEST, if your dog doesn’t know how to play nice, do not bring them!
  • Dogs with resource guarding behaviors or tendencies. This could include food/treats/water, toys or even their owners.
  • Puppies who are too young and not fully vaccinated.

Protect Your Puppy!

According to PreventiveVet.com, puppies should be fully vaccinated and completely protected before going to one of these parks!

That translates into puppies being a minimum of 17 weeks old. It’s impossible to know the health and medical histories of the dogs at these areas, so protect your puppy!

I got a little boy doodle from here and he is a great dog! He has the best of both breeds in him. The perfect personality and has been so easy to train. He is a great addition to my family and a perfect companion for my Pomeranian. I couldn’t be happier! I am out of state and the whole process to get him was very smooth and I have no complaints. Would definitely recommend them!

Our Sammy Joe is now 10 months old and what a beautiful dog. We have had Goldens for over 20 years so we’re very familiar with the breed. He is very healthy and very smart. Mona was so helpful when we contacted her in our search for a dog. We told her what our lifestyle was and what type of puppy we were looking for. She definitely recommend the best dog for us (thanks!) hopefully I’ll get a recent picture of Sammy and add to this post. Thanks again Jim & Paulette

Mona and her family were wonderful to work with. She consistently gave updates as we waited for Oakley to be born. We enjoyed selecting our puppy and then receiving weekly pictures and updates as we awaited picking up Oakley to bring her into our family.Oakley is an incredible dog!! She is spunky, yet gentle. She LOVES people! She has been a fun puppy and very easy to train. She follows instructions well, and we couldn’t be more pleased with this addition to our family. We highly recommend Arkansas Bear Creek Goldens and Doodles for beautiful, well bred dogs who are sharp, smart and easy to train. Mona is wonderful to deal with and Oakley has been a wonderful addition to the Duddleston family.

Three years ago we bought our golden retriever From Bearcreek, she was 10 weeks old. The next day Mona called us to check on her. Throughout Riley’s life, Mona was always there to answer questions and to help us. They truly love their dogs and it shows. I recommend Arkansas Bearcreek to anyone who wants a happy puppy.

Could not be happier with my experience with Arkansas Bear Creek Doodles. They raise the puppies like their own with so much love and care. They were so easy to work with and brought Lexie with everything I could need to get her thorough the first few weeks of transition, including medicine in case she got sick and her favorite toy. She has been the BEST dog.

Our family has purchased 2 puppies from Mona's family. Both of the are wonderful dogs. They're not only adorable, but they have great temperaments and are extremely smart. Both puppies were housebroken in only a few weeks. They're both wonderful family members. I would definitely buy another puppy from them.
