Popular Doodle Cuts You’ll Love!

Table of Contents

If you read our last blog post, “Turning Up the Fun When Grooming Your Dog, and you own a Doodle, you’ll want to follow up with this blog below on popular cuts and styles specifically for the Doodle!

The Poodle Cut

Let’s start with the obvious, the poodle cut! Since doodles are a cross-breed with a poodle, you may want to honor your Doodle’s roots with this classic cut! This elegant style is short in the face, back, belly and sides with a longer and thicker fluffy look on the top of their head, ears and tail (where less matting occurs). This style is easy to maintain and looks great on Goldendoodles!

This is the most popular Doodle style! The hair around the face is slightly feathered with layered hair around the legs and feet creating a fluffy look making your Doodle look younger! This cut helps prevent matting or tangles in Doodles with wavy to curly hair while leaving enough hair to protect them in the winter. This style makes it easy to bathe and clean your Doodle with hair that is only 1-2 inches in length.

The Lamb Cut

Looking for something a bit more adventurous and stylish? Think a Teddy Bear cut with extra length (2-4 inches) on the legs, ears and top of the head. Once used as a popular poodle trend, now it’s typically used on standard-sized Goldendoodles and Labradoodles. It also looks great on mini Goldendoodles and Labradoodles with lots of bounce! Like the Teddy Bear style, this Lamb cut is easy to maintain and prevents matting.

The Summer Cut / Kennel Cut

This style is the shortest haircut with less than an inch of hair (but not shaved!) around the dog’s entire body. Its popularity comes from being the easiest to bathe, requires fewer grooming visits and less brushing until it grows out. It also helps your doodle stay cooler in the hot summer months.

The Mohawk

Sound familiar? It should! It’s exactly what it sounds like, a bold Mohawk strip! This style can be 1) confined to just the top of the head or 2) go from the head down the neck and along the back to the tail. The remainder of the body uses a Teddy Bear cut. With the Mohawk, you can experiment with the exact length and even dye it!

The Lion Cut

With a short cut around the body plus a full mane, your Doodle will look like a lion! To achieve this fun doodle style, the hair on the body is shaved to just ¼ inch leaving a longer, fluffy “mane” around the chest and neck as well as on the feet and tail. Change your mind about this unique cut? It can be easily turned into a Teddy Bear cut!

Fun fact: Back in 2013, a Labradoodle named Charles the Monarch sporting a Lion Cut (to honor the Old Dominion University’s lion mascot in Norfolk, VA) prompted fearful calls to 911 about a lion on the loose!

Regardless of which popular doodle cut you decide to have done on your doodle, each cut is a unique expression and a personal choice. But remember, some of these popular Doodle cuts require more maintenance so choose carefully. Whether you’re looking for a year-round look or an attention-getting change, have fun!
