Is the Bernedoodle puppy the perfect addition to your life?
Meet the Breed: The Bernedoodle!
This mixed, hybrid or designer breed is relatively new in the dog world. The first intentional Bernedoodle introduced in 2003. Described as gentle, goofy, clever and loyal, the Bernedoodle is the perfect canine companion for active owners and families! This K9 breed brings together the best of the Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle breeds. The Bernedoodle is also known as a Bernese Mountain Poo!
This breed adds the intelligence of the Poodle with the charming, happy-go-lucky temperament of the Bernese Mountain Dog. They love to play and cuddle and are happiest around their human families (they can be cautious or skittish around strangers). Bernedoodles were bred for companionship and should not be left alone for long periods without attention in order to avoid separation anxiety (and destructive behaviors). The term “velcro dogs” applies perfectly to this breed.
The Bernedoodle has an active energy level and needs a lot of exercise and mental stimulation for its best quality of life.
As puppies, they may be willful, stubborn or headstrong (requiring more patience and positive reinforcement), but due to their high intelligence, Bernedoodles are highly trainable. As such, they make great first-time dogs as well as service dogs.
FUN FACT
As fluffy as the Bernedoodle looks, they don’t shed a lot and their coat is almost hypoallergenic thanks to their Poodle genetics.
Now, let’s take a closer look at the Bernedoodle’s traits and physical characteristics below.
The Bernedoodle: Traits
- Friendly, social, loyal and goofy.
- Intelligent.
- Typically love the water.
- Well-suited as a Service Dog.
- Prone to Separation Anxiety.
The Bernedoodle: Physical Characteristics
- Depending on their Poodle parent, Bernedoodles can have 3 typical sizes: standard, mini and tiny.
- The curly coat needs frequent grooming to prevent the coat from matting. Although rare, a Bernedoodle may sport a straight coat that sheds more and can trigger human allergies.
- Bernedoodle puppies may take after the slighter look of a Poodle or the larger bulk of the Bernese.
The Bernedoodle: Health
- Considered particularly healthy without many of the health risks of the Bernese Mountain Dog. Bernedoodles are expected to live healthier and longer lives than their purebred parents.
- Also, the rate of cancer in the Bernedoodle seems lower than in the Bernese Mountain Dog.
- The smallest Bernedoodles may live up to 18 years; the miniature up to 17 years and the standard between 12-15 years.
“When you get a Bernedoodle from a mindful, responsible breeder, you get the sweet, mellow temperament of a Bernese (Mountain Dog) blended with the sociability, smarts and sense of humor of a Poodle.”
(Sarah Hodgson, Author, Trainer and Applied Behaviorist, IAABC)
If you’re looking for a great family dog exuding personality, charisma, affection and high intelligence, the Bernedoodle may be the perfect fit for your family!
