A doodle is a doodle, right? Well, not exactly.
A doodle is a hybrid (cross-breed or mixed-breed) from intentionally breeding two purebred canine breeds where one breed is a Standard Poodle.
According to history, the first “doodle” was actually bred by the great-granddaughter of Charles Dickens back in 1969! Monica Dickens bred a Golden Retriever with a Standard Poodle to highlight the best of both breeds. The gentleness of the Golden Retriever with the athletic intelligence of the Poodle (the Poodle is considered the 2nd most intelligent dog breed) while also eliminating the heavy shedding issues from Golden Retrievers.
By the 1990s, the Goldendoodle breed became a well-known and sought-after “designer breed” in Australia and the United States. They also became popular as therapy and guide dogs.
Today there are a variety of doodles to meet the growing demand for hypoallergenic dogs for those who suffer from allergies to other K9 breeds.
Here at Arkansas Bear Creek Goldens and Doodles, we breed high-quality, healthy and well-socialized doodles including the:
- Aussiedoodle: An Australian Shepherd and Standard Poodle.
- Goldendoodle: A Golden Retriever with Standard Poodle.
- Labradoodle: A Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle.
- Mini Labradoodle: A Labrador Retriever and Miniature Poodle; and
- Mini Aussiedoodle: An Australian Shepherd and Miniature Poodle.
Before you purchase a doodle, it is important to understand the
differences and characteristics of each doodle breed and then
choose the one that fits your family and lifestyle best!

How to Identify Doodle Generations
If you are looking to purchase a purebred doodle breed, you have probably noticed the classifications of P, F1, F2 and F3. What do these categories mean and how do they affect your purchasing decision?
First, these “F notations” indicate the generation of the puppies.
- It begins with the “P Generation” or the two purebred parents meaning 100% purebred.
- It begins with the “P Generation” or the two purebred parents meaning 100% purebred.
- From these two purebreds, their puppies are known as “F1 Generation” with 50% from each purebred parent.
- There’s also an “F1b Generation” which indicates an F1 doodle was bred to a Poodle, making the puppies three-fourths Poodle. These puppies are very popular because of their lack of shedding. They also tend to have a more curly coat like the poodle.
- Next, the “F2 Generation” indicates the parents are both F1 Generations; meaning two 50/50 hybrids or cross-breeds were bred.
- Similarly, the “F3 Generation” indicates both parents were F2 Generations where the parents and grandparents were both Goldendoodles.
