As the seasons change, so do the dangers for your beloved dog. Learn how to proactively protect your pups from the potential risks from Fall dangers!

Fall Dangers for Your Dog: Decreased Visibility
With shorter days and longer nights comes reduced visibility. Use the two suggestions below to protect you and your pup!
- Carry a flashlight with you to foresee any potential dangers along your path.
- Make your dog more visible with a:

Wild Mushrooms Pose a Fall Danger to Dogs
Cool, damp piles of leaves are perfect for the growth of wild mushrooms! While not all mushrooms are toxic, it can be difficult to properly identify those that are, especially before your dog’s curious nose sniffs them out!
Remember, mushrooms can sprout up overnight so always check your yard for new mushrooms each day before letting your dog out. Also, keep a sharp eye out on your walks for these toxic fungi!
Beware This Fall Danger for Your Dog: Fall Allergies!
For many of us, Fall means itching, scratching, watery eyes, runny noses and more from ragweed, pollen, mold, dust and grasses. Fall means the same for your canine!
Protect your dog with:
- Regular gentle baths to remove allergens.
- Use only natural, dog-friendly shampoos and conditioners to avoid exacerbating skin issues.
- Wipe or wash your dog’s paws to remove all outdoor allergens.
- Soothe your dog’s skin with a non-medicated and hypoallergenic itch relief product to calm and hydrate irritated skin. (Avoid products containing alcohol or fragrances.)
Fall Means Sweaters and Mothballs, oh My!

It’s that time of year to unpack the sweaters from the mothballs. Mothballs contain high levels of insecticides and are highly toxic to dogs. Once unpacked, immediately store all mothballs safely out of reach of pets (and children)!
Mothball poisoning can result in anemia, vomiting, lethargy, liver or kidney damage and even choking or blockages if chewed or swallowed.
If you suspect poisoning from mothballs, call your veterinarian immediately!
Instead of toxic mothballs, consider using pet-friendly alternatives including:
- Cedar balls, chips or blocks; or
- A lavender sachet.
Two Common Fall Dangers for Your Dog at Home

As the outdoor critters try to come inside for the colder months, insecticides and rodenticides are popular this time of year. Make sure your dog does not have access to any of these pesticides, either outside or when stored in the garage.

Also, protect your dog and other pets from accessing antifreeze! Unfortunately, antifreeze has a sweet smell that attracts our dogs. Even a few quick licks can kill a small to medium-sized dog! Thoroughly clean up any antifreeze spills and avoid any puddles or streams when walking your dog where antifreeze may have runoff.
Finally, Do Not Forget the School Supplies!
School is back in full swing and that means a plethora of school supplies! Dogs and other pets are eternally curious so scented glue sticks or magic markers can pose a real risk to curious noses and mouths! Keep all school supplies and backpacks out of reach of all pets to avoid accidental poisoning or blockages from ingested items.
